Boston, Made Easy: Getting Around Before, During, and After UNBOUND

Boston is a city made for exploring. It’s walkable, well-connected by public transit, and compact enough that some of its best-known neighborhoods are within easy reach of the MCEC.

Whether you’re arriving from Logan, planning to walk to UNBOUND each morning, or making dinner plans after the last session, here’s what you need to know to get around.

From Logan Airport to the MCEC

Flying into Boston Logan International Airport? The Silver Line SL1 offers a direct connection between Logan and the Seaport.

The SL1 picks up outside baggage claim at every airport terminal and service from Logan is complimentary, including a free transfer to the Red Line. Take it to World Trade Center, just steps from the MCEC.

When it’s time to head home, you can take the Silver Line back toward Logan from World Trade Center.

Uber and Lyft are also widely available if you prefer a rideshare or have extra luggage.

Getting Around Boston

Once you’re settled into your hotel, you’ve got plenty of options on how to get to and from your destinations as you explore the city before, during, and after the event.

Take the T
Boston’s MBTA public transportation system (better known as the T) includes subway, bus, trolley, and ferry service throughout Greater Boston. For UNBOUND attendees, two stops are especially useful:

World Trade Center: Steps from the MCEC via the Silver Line.
South Station: About a 15-minute walk from the MCEC, with connections to the subway, bus, Commuter Rail, and Amtrak.

You can tap a contactless credit or debit card, phone, or smart watch to pay your fare. CharlieCards are also available at subway station fare machines.

Tip: Transit can get crowded around major events or commute times, so build in a little extra time during peak conference hours.

Use Rideshare

Uber and Lyft are easy options for getting around Boston, particularly if you’re carrying bags, traveling with a group, or heading out later in the evening.

Pickup areas around the MCEC may get busy as sessions and events let out. Double-check your pickup location.

Travel by Water

Yes, the harbor counts as public transportation here. Boston Water Taxi offers on-demand service at more than 20 Inner Harbor locations, with connections from the Seaport to areas including the North End, Charlestown, East Boston, and Logan Airport.

The MBTA also operates scheduled ferry service. Check bostonwatertaxi.com and mbta.com for current routes and schedules.

Grab a Bluebike

For shorter trips, Bluebikes offers bike-share stations throughout the Seaport and surrounding neighborhoods, with both traditional bikes and e-bikes available within the network.

Use the Bluebikes app or a station kiosk to get started, and check their website for current stations and pass options.

Explore Boston on Foot

You’ll probably do plenty of walking while you’re here. The Seaport is right outside the MCEC, making it easy to grab coffee, meet up for dinner, or take a waterfront walk without going far.

Tip: load your route before heading underground. Cell service can be inconsistent on parts of the T, so knowing your stop and any transfers ahead of time can save some guesswork.

Tips for Traveling and Exploring Boston

As you head out for the day (or night), it helps to keep a few simple habits in mind, many of which apply no matter where you're traveling.

Put your phone away while walking. It helps you stay aware of your surroundings while giving you a chance to take in more of Boston along the way.
Keep bags close to your body, especially in busy areas.
Take off your UNBOUND badge once you leave the MCEC. Keep it handy when you need it onsite, but stow it in your bag while you’re out exploring the city.
Plan ahead for evening outings. Stick to well-lit, main streets when walking at night, and consider using rideshare if you’re heading out solo. Walk with a group and let colleagues or someone else know your plans.
If you prefer not to walk, you have plenty of options. Uber and Lyft are widely available, and the T is convenient for getting around the city. Have your contactless card, phone, or other payment method ready before boarding so you’re not searching for it at the last minute.
